23rd Transatlantic Students Symposium

“In a Queer Time and Place”

Berlin, May 2025

In May 2025, ASC students Natalia Jarosz, Julia Majchrzak, Jagoda Ołdak, Jagoda Targońska, and Julia Wajdziak took part in the 23rd Transatlantic Symposium, organized by Professor Martin Klepper and Dr. Selma Bidlingmaier of Humboldt University of Berlin, together with Dr. Natalia Pamuła and Professor Tomasz Basiuk of the American Studies Center. The Symposium, preceded by preparatory classes conducted throughout the academic year, took place in Berlin and brought together students from the American Studies Center, Humboldt University, and American University.

The theme of this year’s Symposium, “In a Queer Time and Place,” invited participants to explore diverse dimensions of queer temporality and spatiality. Discussions centered on concepts such as queer utopias, performativity, resistance, non-normative spaces, and queer negativity. Over the course of the two-day conference, students presented projects engaging with popular culture, film, and literary narratives through the lens of queer theory.

Beyond the academic sessions, participants took part in a range of plenary and cultural events related to the theme of queer time and space. They visited the Berlin House of Representatives, met with staff members from Café Kuchus for Refugees, and joined a guided tour of the Schöneberg district, led by staff from the Schwules Museum. The Symposium also included a film screening at the XPOSED Queer Film Festival Berlin, where participants attended a preview screening of Salomé (dir. André Antônio).
