What?
Standing Woman (Dir. Toni Hipwell)
A dystopian tale of a near future where the government, rather than imprisoning criminals or deporting immigrants, turns them into trees as part of an insidious environmental campaign. Based on a short story by Yasutaka Tsutsui.
Who?
Dr Max Gee is a Lecturer in Film Studies and Film Production at University of Salford. She holds a PhD by Creative Practice in Screenwriting from the University of York. She was Co-Investigator on AHRC BRAID funded research project, Shared Post-Human Imagination: Human-AI Collaboration in Media Creation and is a Co-Investigator for Innovate UK funded project The AIMICI Companion Tool – upskilling AI competencies in creative industries.
Her award-winning short films Terminal (2019) and Standing Woman (2021) screened at a range of international film festivals. Max has published on posthuman noir; folk horror, gender and Japanese survival horror; her practice research screenplay Golems Inc. in Sightlines: Filmmaking in the Academy and on a maternal sentient bathtub in Horror and Mother/hoods in a Global Cultural Imaginary (upcoming 2026).
